There was just a long and nearly flaming discussion of this on the Street
Touring list. Of course, the longer they are, the closer they get to flames,
pretty much. :-) Depending on which authoritative voice you chose to
listen to, it is claimed that:
"dry cell" is not in the rules as such;
that the glass mat batteries / Absorbed Glass Mat / SVRLA (Sealed
Valve-Regulated Lead Acid). have fully absorbed acid and are treated the same
as the gel cells, which is to say that they don't require a box;
this was supposedly in Fast Track but nobody knows when it was;
and that someone still claims to have been dinged by a presumably not fully
informed tech inspector for not having a box.
If you're looking at the NiCad type (maybe they're NiMH?) like Dyna-Batt I
would figure they would be likewise not needing one. But you might want to
speak to someone who has actual authority here.
