BMW strut insert question

Has anyone replaced a strut insert (cartridge) only on an E36 or Z3
bodied BMW?  I'm trying to figure out if the factory struts are the easy
open type with a threaded gland nut (like my Toyota) or if they are the
sealed type that you have to cut open with a die grinder.  I have only
ever done a full strut assembly swap on this car before.
