I wasn't suggesting removal of the classing structure, just limiting the
maximum number of entries per run group. Of course, what if a run group has
more than 37 real entries? What if a wild pack of WRG drivers show up early
and book the whole first run group and mess up the real competitors? They get
left out in the cold?

Not a perfect solution by any means, but worth adding to the pot we're stirring.

There are several reasons for assigning classes to run groups:
1) To keep each class running at the same time and weather conditions in
order to keep it fair (prime reason)
2) To make sure there are enough workers to man the stations while another
group runs
Probably some others, but those are the key reasons. If we were to use
your system, no one would know who won until the results are posted.
If the main purpose of the driver is to get a time only, that defeats
the purpose of classes. Who cares if it's fair? :) Just list everyone by
their time only? Kinda weird to me. What am I missing?
