If you're riding in a group, nobody makes you ride "in" the group. You can
follow or you can lead, if it makes you more comfortable. Personally, I never
ride in groups. I like to be able to take whatever road I see, and go at my
pace (which may be faster or slower).
As far as going downhill is concerned, weren't you nervous the first time you
drove on the freeway? Now are you more aggressive? Just like driving is fun,
descending on a bike is a huge thrill. My advice: don't do it in a group!
Being in close proximity with other cyclists will understandably make you
nervous. Take smooth lines like you would do in a car. Ride with one buddy
who is a little faster than you and try not to let them lose you. One day
it'll click.
