Ahhh, I know the 7-11 you speak of. I usually do 2 or
three centuries around Mount Hamilton a year and that
7-11 can be quite an oasis. I love the descent on the
backside of Mount Ham. Equally amusing is the sign
that says "no shooting" which has bullet holes through
it.

Katie... I know where you're at. I haven't done much
riding since September 15th and I just started riding
again. My heart rate usually doesn't go much above 195
during an intense ride (intense as in trying to set a
PR up Page Mill, Mount Ham, or OLH where I'm going all
out). Well, it hit 120 while just picking up the bike
before the ride and I briefly nailed 193 on relatively
flat land. When I saw that I just oinked and snorted
in disbelief (before the ride my Tanita fat monitoring
scale laughed at me... I'm about 7% above where I'm
normally at in June). My poor car is going to have to
wait for autocrosses to get attention as I now have to
switch back to the bike as my primary mode of
transportation!

The coach was right though, pedal faster!!! A cadence
of 90 - 110 RPM is most efficient for riding the
rollers and the flats. You want to be geared such that
you can maintain at least 70 RPM while climbing (it's
easier on your knees too). A fast cadence does not
feel natural at first but after a week of practicing
it should start to become much more comfortable.

Perhaps we should arrange an SFRSCCA ride.

Cheers, Joe
