Giles,
I don't want to get into an argument here, please. I've been cord
sorter or whatever for longer than I care to remember...and have very
little trouble figuring out which card goes with which car. Yes (and
I've mentioned before) some of the numbers do not read well...and it's
not always the paper numbers that are the problem as you state, and as
many have stated many, many times.
At the last event, I went up to one of the drivers, who had numbers
only on one side of his car, and told him we had a neat photo of his
car, but because the numbers weren't on both sides, we couldn't use the
photo in Pylon because we didn't know who was driving it. I was amazed
about how fast good clear numbers appeared on both sides of the car! :)
And for all three drivers of the car!
In the group I worked at the last event, with just 3 of us--cone
counter, scorer, and card sorter--all problems were quickly solved and
no reruns were given because of errors, and no one was kept waiting.
As for calling drivers to the MH for their timing slips, that can be
done at the end of the run group, or fit in while the event continues to
run. When no time is posted, and the drivers have the smarts enough to
realize, "Hey, they didn't get my time!" when they come over to the
posting sheets, a lot of this stuff will take care of itself.
        We really shouldn't be doing a lot of hand-holding; I think we're
dealing with adults (or at least I hope so.)
