While I agree with the general point here (focus on driving), I do know
several national champions who said they do pre-season testing on a dyno
with different oils .....

While you're deep in thought, think about this:
The reason they are the top three drivers is because they have become
focused 
on their driving skill and not their motor oil.  They also don't think the 
*supposed* difference in performance justified dumping their 2001 for the 
2002; i.e., the gain in performance didn't translate into anything
meaningful 
on an autox course (hint-hint).  Finally, they're counting on their 
competiton to keep up this mentality; the longer you are either in denial or
mis-focused, the longer you won't improve as a driver, the longer they are 
the top driver.
