IMO, spend a little more and get a small generator. We have a Coleman
Powermate that is 1850Watts and is luggable (about 50#). They are around
$375 new and are fairly quiet. The only downside to this particular model
is that it only hold ~1gal of fuel, so you have to refuel it during the day
(about 3 hours run time).
If you want a larger model, check out the Home Depot Outlet store in EBay.
I got a 5500W 11Hp generator with 11hrs run time for $300 plus shipping
($65).
I don't have much experience with inverters, but when we tried to run the
timer off a regular car battery in our trailer, it was a comedy of
errors.....forgetting to recharge the battery, etc.
