Roger, I must echo your observations.

My records over the last couple years also indicate over 10k miles traveled and
150+ runs per year with tires just a small percentage of the total cost, my
perpetual cheapness forces me to track this all the time. It seems my costs go
up each year along with the commitment level, although it really helps that I
travel with a co-driver. But the return is not just the thrill of the
competition, but really the opportunity to meet more of my fellow competitors
and make new friends. After all, the fact is we generally run only 8 minutes
over a 2-day weekend so you have to figure out what else to do with the other 47
hours and 52 minutes, with travel and sleep being some part of that equation.
The worst part is that 8 minutes shrinks as you get better, it was probably more
like 10 minutes when I started this sport. Maybe I should've just stuck to the
video games, it would have been cheaper.......
