You do not tell us where you live and the ambient
weather conditions, as that may have an
impact.  I would have suggested that you check
your oil pressure gauge and its line before
rebuilding the engine.  A dollop of dirt in the
line can cause the pressure to fall to zero
without any real meaning.  And in very cold
conditions -- say, 0 deg F, bits of ice can form
in the line from water trapped in the oil to do the same.
