Ed,
       Over the years, my Alpines have been the most fun and predictable cars 
to drive in rain or snow of any cars I have owned: perhaps that has to do 
with the seat-time earned in owning 16 Rootesmobiles.  There is nothing more 
fun than generating controlled oversteer in an Alpine and wet (or otherwise 
slippery) surfaces make it possible.  
       I must add that a stiffened suspension in an absolute necessity: the 
boulevard-ride suspensions Rootes gave us do not help at all.  On the other 
hand, my Tiger (also with an open differential) was a dog in the rain on the 
street: however, it was incredibly competitive in the rain when Vintage 
racing.
