Vintage Racing

I have never been to one of the vintage races, but lately I have been 
thinking about building a vintage racer.
My question is how original does the car have to be?  
What can be done to the engine?
Can a Series V engine be used in a Series I car?
Can a V6 be used?

Anyone familiar with the rules, I would love to hear from you.

I have a good spare rolling Series I.  I have a Series III engine but no 
transmission so I was thinking about the vintage racer.
