Update: Clutch problems

Thanks to everyone that replied to my call for help. The problem was correctly
diagnosed by Jan (jumpinjan) as being the incorrect release bearing. The
bearing box I received from my parts supplier was marked as a release bearing
for a MGB not an Alpine S1.

I should have looked closer at the part and box I received. Experience is a
ruthless teacher!
