Rear drums

I'm converting my S1 to 4-bolt rims. I've completed the front hubs and now
starting on the rears. After I removed the wheels, I noticed the drums have
the raised bosses. I remember some posts in the pasts saying that spacers have
to used. Has anyone machined away the bosses? Is this safer than using
spacers? If I use the spacers, will I need longer lug  studs? Any advise would
be appreciated.
