Dwayne--IMHO, anything you can do to get a higher voltage potential at the
spark plug is a good thing. From that simple perspective, an upgraded coil
makes sense, as well as a more efficient voltage switching device such as
the Pertronix. An often overlooked part of this equation are your ignition
cables-they should be the best you can buy so that they don't "strangle" the
increased voltage. With that said, I have nearly 20K flawless (immediate
startup, smooth idle and power delivery) miles on the Lucas gold coil,
Magnecor KV85 cables, and Pertronix. My stock copper plus Champion plugs
were originally up-gapped to 0.040, but I have since brought them back to
0.030 as I was experiencing distributor cap tracking failures quite often
due to the increased voltage. As always, YMMV. Good luck, it's worth
investigating.
