noise in tranny

Hi everyone,
I have a 73 tr 6  with J type overdrive.  Today I went for a zest ride and when 
I went to get gas, I heard a slight grinding sound from the trany.  Everytine I 
stated to go, I could hear it.  There is less grinding when I take off in 2nd 
gear, and no audible noise when driving at speed.  No noise if I let the car 
coast in neutral.  

can someone please take a guess at to what is wrong with it.
