Jim---You may never determine why the oil level went up during the
storage time, unless you find the torn diaphragm in the pump (not
likely) or find dirt or something stuck in one of the float control
valves. It would've been good to know what the oil level was just before
you stored the car. Even oil not directly contaminated with raw fuel can
smell like has been. (It has to do with combustion by-products that mix
with the oil in nearly all engines.)
Also, if raw fuel is getting into the oil pan, leaving the drain plug
out after you drain the oil may show straight fuel to still be coming
out, tho this would probably take quite a while to be obvious.
You did right by draining the oil and starting over. It would pay to
watch the level, checking with the engine cold, before the next few
startups.
