column switch problems

Please, somebody tell me there's a secret to threading the column switch 
wiring harness(s) through the space under the lower steering column clamp!  I 
can't see how it is possible to get the Overdrive, light and "trafficator" 
bundles 
through and put the cover back on.  I've tried everything.  It's like 
"shooting pool with a piece of spaghetti"
