Dick,

Thanks - you're always a goldmine of good info for me...
Here's the update:
1) Ring gear is in excellent condition, with only one small burr on
it. The starter gear is the problem; has about 2 rounded shoulders.
Unfortunately it's hardened, and I'm only able to take minimal
amount of it.I cleaned out 30 years of crap from it, hardened grease
etc, oiled it with a graphite oil, ran the hell out if it directly
from the battery, activated the solenoid throw many times. Result,
it sure runs faster, solenoid throws way better, than it ever did
before. My Jag-man has a machine shop. I'm going this AM. If he
has the tools I'll clean up the burrs.

2) The clutch. remarkable. Only about 1/2 worn. The throw
bearing is a Koyo, the replacement is a no-name-shown. IIRC, Koyo
is a Toyota throw, ex-landrover, right? I put a little graphite in
the race, it very freely spins, no binding, no spots in it. Should
I keep the koyo, or replace it?

3) The clutch plate. No scars, looks good, but.... The fingers are
very worn on it, the throw race is slightly oversize. A grove,
better'n 1/32 is cut into the fingers. It's toast, I believe. The
new Plate has a different finger pattern, and fits both the koya and
no-name much better.

4) The throw shaft... Some wear, some heat scoring. No nicks,
scars etc. Cleaned it off, used Brasso to polish it, round and
round, finished it off with SWMBO's silver polish. Damn, it shines.
Inside the throw race holder also. Used a high temp motorcycle
chain grease to lube it, ran it in/out many times, more graphite
grease, many times in/out again, and it slides so smoothly, so
well.. Proof'll be in use 2K miles from now, of course.

5) Peddle play. Minimal play really, can't get much more than a
.025 feeler in there. It to will get the M/c chain oil (very
sticky, works well in heat) and graphite treatment. The 'weaklink'
is the connector to the M/C throw rod. Much play. Today it cones
out, get's oversized, and a brass race piece will be inserted, plus
new pin. Should fix that.

6) The slave shaft to the clutch lever is bent slightly.. is this
normal, acceptable or should I straighten before re install. New
pin/brass tube race will go in here also..

As I said Dick, Many thanks to you, and everyone else, for their
willingness to provide guidance, help and feed back.. This is a
great list!
