first let me say thanks to everyone that has offered me advice on this so
far.

i have now replaced both +ve and ground battery leads, cleaned the terminals
etc. "click".

i completely bypassed the red/white wire from the starter to the ignition
switch and ran a jumper direct from the +ve battery terminal to the starter.
"click". so i believe this eliminates the possibility of a short either in
the r/w wire or the ignition switch. i did notice that measured at the r/w
wire connector on the starter the voltage was only 10V (even though it was
12V at the main battery connection on the starter, and at the other
(battery) end of the wire i connected directly to the battery to jump the
r/w wire).

it would seem at this point that there's not much left but the starter and
solenoid itself, but i just replaced this with a recon unit from Moss, so
that perplexes me. is this likely?

thanks again for any help.

cheers,
-keith
