Mark---Yes, the stock tire does fill up the wheel well nicely.
Especially when using springs that lower the car an inch or so. The
stock tires were 185x78x15. (Some say the middle number, the aspect
ratio, could be as high as 83, but this puts the tire standing at 27
inches) I believe the original tire diameter is around 26.5 inches. If
you want the same diameter in a wider tire, it would be necessary to go
to a 215x70x15. The 215 stretches the limit of the stock 5.5" rim, and
most choose to go with the 205x70x15, which is slightly smaller in width
and diameter. Or go to the "plus 1" package, that usually means a rim
width of 6.5 or 7 inches, and of course a taller rim of 16 inches.
