I can attest to the advantages of a lightened flywheel from a strictly
performance and from a performance/dollar perspective. In the winter of 2000,
while installing an OD transmission, doing some clutch work and replacing the
rear seals, I did some research using the list about removing weight from the
flywheel. The opinions were varied as you would expect, but most everyone
recommended it as a relatively inexpensive way to quicken engine spool-up.
I found a local shop who did not do the work themselves, but had a guy who did
it on the side. As many on the list recommended, I took my flywheel down from
28 to 18 pounds. The removal of the metal and re-balance of the flywheel cost
$70. When I got everything back together, I was amazed and pleased with the
improvement in performance. I have not experienced any negatives at all from
removing the weight. I experience no problems in starting from a dead stop and
don't really have to raise the RPM's much to get moving.
I would highly recommend the removal of this weight as an inexpensive means of
improving the performance.
