Dave,
Replacing sealed-beam headlamps with halogen lamps is one of the first
things any classic car owner should consider doing. Aside from
the benefit of a brighter, whiter light, the lamps will continue to
work if the globe is cracked by a stone.
You did the correct thing by putting them on separate relays. The
original wiring cannot support the load of the big bulbs.
I run Marchal CatsEyes, plus Cibie Oscars. Yeah, I know, my lights
are probably worth more than the whole car! :) I also have a driving
lamp for a back-up light; it is really useful for getting SUVs off
my tail.
One does have to be careful with the police; all that reflecting area
does draw a lot of attention from Constable Plod, so make sure they
are DOT approved. Ask me how I know; neither the Marchals or the
Oscars are approved; "For offroad driving only". :)
