Walt---Bad U-joints on one or both ends of the drive shaft, as Tim
suspects, can cause the gear shift to vibrate at the road speeds that
you say this shows up. Merely wobbling can sometimes be corrected by
packing the shifting ball and plate with a heavy grease coating, then
adjusting the two side screws that help the shifter enter the gates. The
key to the cure is whether the gear shift is vibrating or just wobbling.
If a U-joint is going south, the symptom will get progressively worse
and the speeds where it shows up will become lower.
