I have used one for about 2 years (~8000 miles) -- no problems so far. Yes
it does replace the points and condenser for a stock TR6 distributor.

I don't know about increasing performance per se, but it did noticeably
smooth out the idle on my car. I like the fact that it looks almost stock
except for one extra wire coming out of the distributor to the coil. And
like Kai R. stated (or is about to state, depending on which sequence you
receive our two replies in), it does compensate somewhat for a wobbly dist
shaft. Makes the timing seem much more "steady" when you watch it with a
timing light.

As for the spare in the trunk/tool box, get a spare distributor contact
plate (the thing the points mount to) and install the points with the
correct gap for your car already set up on this spare plate. Keep that in
your spare parts stash. That way if the Ignitor "black box" does fail, you
won't have to set the point gap on the road. Just pop the spare dist plate
in, hook up the wires and away you go. A used spare plate should be
obtainable from your favorite british used parts vendor.

Good luck!
