Thrust washers

Not sure about the 2000, but on any other car I've done this job on, the
thrust washers can be extracted from underneath once the rear bearing
cap is removed.

No, I'm sure the starter ring should be dry, much as it goes against
instinct. Otherwise it will pick up dirt, which would cause wear and
potentially jambing.

For the clutch driven plate splines, something that won't melt. I've
heard copperease suggested, also just a light oily wipe. Someone will
know better I am sure.
