I had no trouble at all doing it on TS39781LO, but it had already been modified to eliminate the nut on the top bolt. Even without the mod though, it should be far easier to put the gear drive start

Once after I had had the starter on the bench for some work and reinstalled it, the rear bushing popped out (part #38 in Moss catalog). Performance was just as you describe. I had found a bushing on

Interesting. You had the same experience as I. Apparently my car (and yours) have the later starter and ring gear that were not supposed to be on the cars until about TS50000. The later starter has
