FWIW, I found the Sears tool unacceptable even when installing springs (although I was installing high performance springs from BFE). However, I used to own the KD tools compressor I mentioned, and

I use a home-made steel flat shaped very much like the tool KD 912, on the web page pointed to by Randall. With an old rocker shaft or some plastic tabe to protect a new one, it's quick and effective
