On my '71 GT-6 starter motor there is a square on the end of the armature shaft (end opposite of the flywheel engagement). What is the purpose of this square, why would I want to use a wrench to rota

One reason would be to free the starter if it jams in the ring gear teeth.

I suppose that if the starter became stuck while engaged with the flywheel, one could free it by putting a wrench on that square portion. The only reason I can think of not to cut it off would be tha
