The only way the switch will affect performance is if the carbon core wires were deteriorated or defective. Of course you'll get a lot more RFI with the non-suppressor wires. In my case, with the TR

BTW, HF sells a decent test light, with a sharp probe that's handy for making contact inside connectors or piercing insulation and a long lead with a clip for the ground side, for about $3. Even less
