I can resemble that comment. I believe the sponginess comes from the presence of very small air bubbles in the system. Another possibility is that old hydraulic line may tend to expand under pressure

Snap-On and several automotive suppliers have a kit that can be used to test radiator coolant for contamination from exhaust gasses. I suggest you use this to check, beats cracking the engine open. D

The 260 in many peoples minds is a 289 with a smaller bore. Ford tech manuals state that the maximum overbore for a 260 is .030. Many people have used this limit with success, but it is the variation
