On our 68, the gauge read 3/4 full regardless when we first got it. I removed tank and pulled the sender. It was frozen in place, I sprayed it down with WD and gently started to wiggle it back and fo

Early senders and gauges work in reverse to later ones. You can't mix the two. What you descibe sounds like a later gauge with and early sender. This combo (if functioning) would read empty when the
