Frank C. agrees with you that the only way to remove the switch is to pry it out and break it. I was able to verify that the heater switch was the problem by following the attached procedure closely
The switch snaps out of the bezel and should be interchangable. The switch can be removed without breaking it (I'm not saying it's easy). Removal procedure depends on if you have the wire clip type
