My '77 spit passenger side headlight just blew-out today (on the low-beam side). I need to replace the lamp, but how exactly do I do this? My hayes manual indicates I need to remove an outer-housing,

Rick, Replacing the headlight is not easy at all. Your car does have an outer housing which comprises of the entire headlight bay. To remove you will have to open the bonnet and remove three bolts wh

And to further answer the question, I believe the 'snap-ring' is the chrome retaining ring around the headlight itself, found on the older Spits only (Mk1 & 2?). IIRC, the '77 lamp retaining ring is
