Pete, It sounds as if someone has pulled the distributor and worked on the engine. Then when it was put back together, they put the dizzy drive in backwards. The vacumn pipe should be pointing away

you should be able to rotate the distributor housing relative to the engine without any problems as long as you also rotate the positions of the wires to make sure that the rotor fires the right cyli

Sounds like you may have installed your distributor 90 degrees off. You can twist the distributor (and thus the cap) around to the position you wish. You just have to make sure, prior to starting it

Hi Pete Take all the leads off and move them one place clockwise then turn the dizzy body 90 degrees anti clockwise, this should keep the leads in the right relative position and move the vacuum hose
