- You might have better luck mounting them in the curved panels on either side. There is some extra space in the "hips" of the car. But it is an oddly-shaped space... Do NOT mount speakers way up front

- When you do the brakes, you really ought to remove the clips that hold the cylinder in place, and clean and (lightly) re-lube the mating surfaces. Also change the rubber boot if it is falling apart.

- My problem is nastier. The U-joint cup moves from side to side, and sometimes when you bend the joint, the cups sometimes rotate in the yokes... There isn't really any axial endplay like you describe
