It's certainly enough to make me want to investigate further! Normally, the axles on a 1973 or later Spitfire measure about 1" longer than those of the 1972 and earlier Spitfires (and Heralds, etc.).

AFAIK, all MkIV US-spec Spitfires for 1971 had the 3.89:1 diff, as did all US-spec 1500s from 1973 on. The 1972 US-spec Spitfire MkIV had a 4.11:1 diff regardless. Unlike some GT6 and TR models, the
