I've done it that way, turned out pretty good and lots easier than hanging a new door IMO. Hard part was joining the new wood to the old, but some wood putty and paint covered a multitude of sins. N

When putting it all back together, I suggest using finish screws instead of nails. Some of the wood you would be nailing to is certainly a bit drier than when it was first assembled, and I believe t
