Ammonia is a base instead of an acid, but caustics will eat things too. . .however since ammonia is used as a cleaner/disinfectant, it shouldn't eat most truck materials. Mark Noakes 58/56 Suburban K

For Art Deco and earlier trucks the recommendation is to use ammonia to soften the cardboard, but this turns them into mush in short order. For AD I spray paint on the hidden side to help waterproof
