- Greetings from Savannah, Georgia!! New problem: alternator is smoking badly and ingniton light will not go off. Fan belt is new and tight. Is this a sign the alternator is shot or some kind of wiring

- kind Short-circuit diodes. You may be able to replace just the diode pack, but if is smoking it is probably safer to replace the whole thing. I trust the battery is connected the correct way round?
