Rapid pumping does indicate empty float bowls. If you have the Hall-effect pump, rather than the transistor assisted points type, I don't trust them. My V8 has one and started doing what you describe

What does an A have for a carb heat shield? I wonder if you could back the thin metal shield with some of that foil-faced underhood insulation or header wrap material, to try to keep the exhaust heat

It has a piece of sheet metal between the carbs and the exhaust manifold. At the ends of this piece there are two bits of asbestos on the side towards the exhaust manifold runners for ports #1 and #4

Well, first rule is always "fix what you know is wrong then try again". It does sound like lack of choke, but that should be worst when first starting and rapidly get better over the next 2 or 3 mile

Generally speaking, one can stop using the choke of the HIFs within 1/4 mile of driving in air temp of 55 degrees. I don't think the stumbling is related to the choke, though it could be a lean mixt
