Based on the description of the sound you are hearing adn the fact that you can't get over 35MPH, I would tend to agree with the mechanic. Of course I can't be sure not actually having heard the sou

How many miles on the engine? 60-70K miles or some multiple of that will almost definitely spell rebuild time. Warm the engine ever so gently, then drain the oil and inspect it for bronze metal flak

If you want to see what bearing fragments look like and what a spun bearing can do to a motor, take a look at my website. http://www.apphosting.com/mgstuff/ Look under MGB GT. Mine didn't give any w

Oh dear. I am afraid that that is precisely the symptom of main bearing damage. At least that is how mine manifested itself. Clunking or knocking sound, rapidly growing louder, until performance was

It certainly sounds as if one or more bearings have died. How many miles do you have on that engine? What is your oil pressure? The '69s and (maybe) 68's were shipped with an unconscionably defectiv

Too many odometers in too many MG's told a similar tale. It isn't carved in that the engine must be rebuilt at that mileage, only something I have observed in a bunch of engines. Another theory I hav

BTW, where are you and the car located? Maybe some of us in your proximity would like to offer a physical hand and some moral support to a new MG owner. MG people have been known to do that. They wi

Totally depends on the mileage. I initially grew up thinking X miles was a "lot", but in later years I learned from my father was a salesman who put on probably 30k to 50k miles a year. I myself now
