Went to Import Auto Parts, downtown Fort Walton Beach (not endorsing any business), and picked up a new water pump w/gasket for $47. To my surprise, they carry quite a few parts for MGs. Currently in

Could it be the thermostat ? I believe it could be the thermostat. I also believe in simple tests. Suggest that you try the car without the thermostat and see if it still runs hot. If ok, install a
