It sounds very much like poor centreing to me. Later SUs had biased (Sprung) needles but fixed needle carbs are not at all tolerant of out-of-centre needles. However, check first that uyou don't hav

Glad to hear you found the problem, we were all newbies at one time and mistakes are how we learn... I had a similar problem, one of my dashpots had a small ding/burr inside that would catch the pist
