I'm having some trouble replacing the steering rack boots on my 7= B. Im trying to separate the ball joint from the steering arm. It dosen't= want to let go. I've tried the methods in the Haynes manu

The Haynes method indead does not work. There are two special tools for this job. I recommend the first one. 1 a small fork goes betwwen the joint and the arm. turning a screw connected to the tool

Since you'll have to remove the track rod end from the tie rod anyway you might as well leave the former where they are and unscrew in situ. Either that or remove the steering arm from the swivel hub

I had the same trouble on my 78B. Just go down to autozone and rent a ball joint spreader. After 20mins of trying to get it off, I drove into town to get the tool. Needless to say, I had both of them

Rick's point about beating rythmically is a good one. I changed my boots recently and found that a series of medium blows with a standard hammer did the trick--whereas a few big blows had no effect.
