Tell your brother the probelem isn't vacuum, except that it sucks. You've got a problem with either the ignition or fuel system. Two things come to mind as prime candidates: 1) faulty fuel pump. Next

Since you don't mention what year/model of MG you're working on, it's difficult to answer the question even though most MGs use the same type wiring/color coding regardless of the year of manufacture
