- The last time I had the symptoms you describe (lights gradually dimming on the ride home), the problem was the fan belt was loose, thereby preventing the alternator from fully charging the battery.

- I have not had good luck with replacement leaf springs. I replaced mine two years ago on my MGB, and after a few months, they had sagged quite a bit. I found some old BGT springs which have been fine
