- James, sounds like either too much bearing crush (the shells stand too proud of the parting surfaces) or incorrect torque on the studs/bolts that is causing the housing bore to pull in at the parting

- I think you're safe using the bearings still. If you can get your hands on a dial bore gauge to measure the actual ID of the bearings as bolted in the block that is the best way to check bearing clea

- I reassembled the crank/bearings, and torqued them up to spec. The back cap/oil seal has a much higher torque spec than the others, that I didn't use before. Now there is no initial stiction (Yay!!)
