Ray, Mike Allison wrote a comprehensive article on engine colors a few years back....I think the NAMMM newsletter reprinted it, it was also in Safety Fast. Don't remember if it went as far back as M

First early myth I heard as I chased same issue on my PA was... all pre-war engines were red. Blue was exclusive to factory racing engines and green indicated the engine had failed final inspection
