Am I correct in thinking the heat effect on my stainless turbo header will render any polishing a wasted effort? It's 316 actually, not 304.... I know about polishing and I am not looking forward to

You could polish it if you have a bad case of 'chromatosis' otherwise leave it as is like the indy cars do.. The most important thing to do is to back gas it when it is welded.. Dave
